December 2007 Psalm 145:16 (New King James Version)
16 You open Your hand and satisfy
the desire of every living thing.
The Christ of Christmas
In years past, I spent plenty of time preparing
for Christmas: buying gifts, putting up decorations,
sending
cards, celebrating. But, in all that preparation, I found I spent
little time preparing my heart. I think back to the line of the
classic song Joy to the World, “Let every heart prepare Him room”.
For me, I found myself spending so much time doing
all the things we do at Christmas and keeping traditions that I had
little time to reflect on the true meaning and purpose of the
season. God sent His Son in the fullness of time (Galatians 4:4)
because He was overwhelmed in His heart by His love for mankind. He
came to pay a debt He didn’t owe, because I owed a debt I couldn’t
pay. God lovingly opened His hand and gave us His Son. In the gift
of Christ, I found life. I found meaning and purpose. I found joy
that cannot be quenched and that cannot be denied.
The greatest gift I can receive this Christmas
will not come wrapped in paper or have a beautiful bow. It will not
need to come with a gift receipt, because I would certainly not want
to return it. And, the best part about this gift is I can in turn
give it to someone else.
This life that I found in the gift of Jesus has
changed me. The presence of that Holy Child in a manger so many
years ago now lives on the inside of me. May we take the time to
reflect on His Goodness. May we take the time to reflect on His
Grace. May His love overwhelm us this Christmas season and cause us
to reach out and to give as He did. Our opportunity awaits us.
Praise His Name!
Blessings!
